Digital vignette Austria

Digital vignette and toll in Austria

In Austria, a vignette is required to use motorways and expressways. There are two types of vignettes. On the one hand, the well-known adhesive vignette, also affectionately called “Pickerl” or “Plakete”, as well as the modern form, the digital vignette. The advantages are apparent. In addition, there are tolls for pass roads, such as the Brenner motorway and Tauern motorway, as well as bridges and tunnels. A GO box is required for vehicles with a GVW of over 3.5 tonnes.

The vehicle types of the digital vignette for Austria

Motorcycle

In Austria, the only difference that determines the vignette regulations is the weight of the vehicle. Every motorcycle with a permissible gross vehicle weight (GVW) of less than 3.5 tonnes requires a digital vignette.

Motor vehicle

There is also no distinction made in Austria when it comes to four-wheeled motor vehicles. Every motor vehicle with a permissible gross vehicle weight (GVW) of up to 3.5 tonnes is subject to a vignette. Also applies to motorhomes and vans.

Motorhomes

Motorhomes and vans with a permissible total weight of over 3.5 tonnes do not require a vignette, but must pay a route-dependent toll. For this we need a so-called GO box.

Note

Trailers and caravans do not require a vignette in Austria. The only decisive factor is that the weight of the towing vehicle is less than 3.5 tonnes permissible gross vehicle weight (GVW). If the permissible total weight of the trailer exceeds 3.5 tonnes, a route-dependent toll is due and a so-called GO box is required.
